Leading the way

Technology is a driving force in our world today, and staying connected to the latest breakthroughs and discoveries moves us forward. At Alabama Power, we’re not just following the latest trends, we’re helping to develop them.

Accelerating energy

01

We’ve partnered with Techstars, a worldwide network that supports entrepreneurs, to create the Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator. Alongside the Alabama Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, PowerSouth, Altec and the University of Alabama, we’re using the accelerator to source startups addressing innovative technologies in the electrical and utility industries. This partnership will help the advancement of Smart Cities, industrial electrification, connectivity and electric transportation. Together we’re supporting the development of new technologies and job creation, leading to a brighter future of sustained success.

Accelerating education

New partnerships with Apple will create groundbreaking education initiatives that give our students what all of us want for our children: the best.

The Alabama Power Foundation, Apple, TechAlabama and Birmingham City Schools designed Ed Farm to drive outcomes in education equity, learning and workforce development. The program provides educators, schools and communities with innovative learning tools and strategies. There are three tracks: Apple’s Swift programming language education for adults, a yearlong learning challenge for middle and high school student fellows and an annual cohort for teacher fellows.

Southern Company and Apple have also committed to invest $25 million each to build the Propel Center at the Atlanta University Center. This is a part of the Southern Company’s family of foundations’ $100 million commitment to advance educational equality. The center will serve as a first-of-its-kind global innovation and learning hub for historically black colleges and universities. This innovation epicenter has been created to transform the talent pipeline by building a generation of leaders who advance equity and justice through technology, entrepreneurship, education and social impact.

Accelerating entrepreneurship

The Bronze Valley Accelerator is a free program supported by Alabama Power and the Alabama Department of Commerce that serves early-stage technology startups with roots in Birmingham and the Southeast. The program, a partnership between Bronze Valley and the nationally ranked startup accelerator gener8tor, provides participants with intensive and individualized coaching, and access to a national network of mentors, potential customers, corporate partners and investors.

The program is geared toward helping underrepresented founders – specifically, people of color and women – as well as students and affiliates of historically black colleges and universities accelerate their businesses. The first cohort graduated in fall 2020. In addition to accelerator services, Bronze Valley offers advisory services to startups in its network through its C-Suite on demand service.
