Even though forecasting technology like Doppler radar continues to improve, severe weather can still be unpredictable. And while Alabama Power has created technologies and maintenance protocols that minimize outages, they can still occur. Technology enhancements have also created efficiencies for the company. Automated applications identify the locations of faults and reduce the distance crews need to patrol. Our comprehensive power restoration plans, and the world-class professionals who carry them out, help ensure that if the power does go out, we restore it as quickly and safely as possible. And we have achieved one of the highest reliability ratings in the industry.

And our employees are just as reliable. As an essential business, Alabama Power never closed. Utility workers have been at the forefront of the global pandemic, alongside other first responders, providing electric service to customers and communities. We started Feed the Front, an initiative during COVID-19, to thank our on-site, business-critical employees with meals, while supporting local restaurants struggling during this unprecedented time.

Adding fiber to our power grid has made it smarter and more secure than ever for our customers. These system upgrades can also help advance technology-based economic development across the state. We’ve utilized the extra fiber capacity of our grid to help bridge the digital divide. Partnerships with third-party broadband providers allow for the use of our established fiber optics distribution network and connectivity infrastructure to deliver high-speed internet service to places that have never had it. Connectivity is key in developing an inclusive economy, creating more technology-related jobs and elevating the communities we serve.
